14 São Lourenço: The Edge of the Island

“Today,” chirped Little Bird, “we’re going to the very tip of Madeira—where the island kisses the sea and the land turns wild.”
Mia packed her backpack with walking shoes and her swimsuit, just in case. Down at the Calheta marina, a sleek boat awaited them.
As they sailed along the coastline, Mia gasped. “The cliffs look like dragons’ tails diving into the sea!”
Dolphins leapt beside the boat—Baby Dolphin and her family! Mia waved, and they flipped joyfully in reply.
They arrived at Quinta do Lorde marina and began their hike along the São Lourenço trail. The path was rocky, and the land felt different—no trees, only strong shrubs and dancing wind.
“It feels like another planet,” Mia whispered, her hair whipped by the breeze.
As they reached a quiet pebble beach, Mia spotted something moving.
“What is that?” she whispered.
Little Bird hushed her. “That’s a monk seal—one of the rarest animals in the world. Only about 600 are left, and some live right here in Madeira.”
They sat quietly, watching the seal roll over the stones, yawn, and slide gently back into the sea.
“We’re lucky,” said Little Bird. “And with love and care, maybe these creatures will always have a home here.”
Mia nodded, her eyes full of wonder. “Let’s always protect places like this. They’re treasures.”
The wind carried their promise out to sea.
