5  Câmara de Lobos: Seaside Surprises

The sun danced across the water as Mia and Little Bird arrived in Câmara de Lobos, a colorful fishing village nestled in a crescent bay. Bright boats bobbed gently in the harbor like floating crayons, and seagulls soared overhead, calling to the waves.

Mia skipped along the cobbled streets. Fishermen waved as they dried long strips of fish on ropes hanging from the boats.

“What are those?” Mia asked, eyes wide.

A fisherman chuckled. “That’s gata fish! We salt it and dry it in the sea air—an old Madeira tradition.”

Mia sniffed the salty breeze. Her tummy rumbled.

She followed a delicious aroma to a cozy café where people were eating something sizzling in shells.

“Those are lapas!” said Little Bird. “You must try them.”

Mia sat down, and the waitress placed a hot pan in front of her. “Careful, miss! Squeeze this lemon over the lapas.”

Sssssss! They sizzled like magic.

Mia popped one in her mouth. It tasted of the ocean—fresh, buttery, and just a little wild.

“Delicious!” she giggled.

Just then, Little Bird flew off and returned with two juicy cherries, their skins shining in the sun.

“These are from Jardim da Serra,” he chirped. “A treasure from the hills above.”

They each ate one. Mia’s lips turned pink, and Little Bird’s beak was stained red.

They both laughed under the cherry-colored sky, thankful for sea, salt, and sweet surprises.
